Tula monuments
In 1795 Tula rebelled against its white masters. He was publicly tortured to death on the same spot where this impressive statue now stands. After the revolt was crushed, the Curaçao government formulated new rules that defined the rights of slaves on the island. This made living conditions a little less difficult. Tula is revered as a champion of human rights and independence. The Tula Monument can be found on the south coast of the island, near the Holiday Beach Hotel.
Monuments of a fist with a broken handcuff have been placed at the 7 main sites of the uprising.
